When a Ph.D. dropout with a Vlog does a better job than peer review
A story recently published in Science entitled Misconduct sleuth in China swiftly gains acclaim for calling out questionable papers, DOI: 10.1126/science.zdqjrzj, shows us the current state of academic integrity.
A former biomedical Ph.D. student in China, Geng Hongwei, quit his doctorate in 2025 because he was unhappy with his career prospects. He became a full-time science vlogger. Today, with 3 million followers on video platforms like Bilibili and Douyin, he is doing something amazing: he is exposing fake scientific papers authored by famous professors at top universities.
And the best part? His videos are actually getting high-ranking academics dismissed and deans demoted.
Here is what this crazy story tells us about modern academia.
The “Too Many Fives” Method
How does a vlogger catch top scientists cheating? He doesn’t use magic. He just looks at the raw data that peer reviewers clearly ignored.
In one paper published in a top journal, researchers recorded the weights of laboratory mice. When Geng looked at the numbers, he noticed something very strange: there were way too many “fives” in the digits. Real lab data has random numbers, but whoever made up these fake numbers clearly had a favorite digit.
Think about this for a second. The paper went through months of peer review, it was published in a prestigious journal, and nobody noticed that the mouse weights were totally made up.
It took a former Ph.D. student checking raw data on his laptop to say: “Wait, this is not how mice work.”
Social Media vs. University Committees
According to research cited in the article, almost half of Chinese universities don’t even have a webpage for academic integrity, and very few publish annual reports on research misconduct.
Internal university systems usually prefer to ignore complaints or give minor punishments to keep things quiet. But when a vlogger with 3 million followers posts a video about your fake paper, suddenly the university administration wakes up. In just two months, several universities have launched quick investigations, disciplined researchers, and fired senior scholars.
The lesson? The institutional system doesn’t move when you send an official email. It moves when you make a public scandal on social media.
The Real Problem: the Numbers Game
Why do scientists fake mouse weights or copy-paste images in the first place?
Because the system doesn’t care if your research is reproducible or truly valuable. It only cares about counts: how many papers you publish and how high the journal ranking is. When your job, your funding, and your whole career depend on churning out papers every month, some people simply start inventing the data.
Until universities change how they evaluate researchers, people will keep cheating. And we will have to rely on YouTubers and vloggers to do the job that peer review was supposed to do.
The Metric Madness
Ever since academia decided that human intelligence and scientific merit could be reduced to a single score—be it the h-index, impact factor, or annual publication count—we have all collectively gone insane. We don’t write papers to share knowledge anymore, we write papers to feed the metric monster. On a personal note, this madness hits a bit too close to home. Recently, I realized that one of the most historical and renowned journals in my field unexpectedly downgraded from Quartile 2 to Quartile 3. I was really sad, and now I’m seriously considering not submitting an article I have in preparation, unless the journal upgrades in the next years. Think about how absurd this is: the quality of the science in my draft didn't change overnight, but because an algorithm shifted a quartile rating, months of hard work suddenly feel "less valuable" for university evaluations. This contrast between "decades of history and prestige" vs. "an arbitrary quartile shift" is still an inner conflict.
As Goodhart’s Law famously warned us: “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.”
Academia, however, took that warning as a personal challenge. There is a classic academic paradox stating that if we keep publishing at this exponential rate just to satisfy administrative KPIs, we will run out of paper, trees, and server bandwidth long before we run out of fabricated datasets.
It is great that these fake papers are finally being exposed, but it is deeply sad that it takes a vlogger with millions of followers to force universities to do basic quality control.

As someone who has personally interacted with Chinese scientists publishing in Nature, Lancet, Cell etc, I have no doubt that they are brilliant. There are just a few rotten ones out there who are giving their country a bad name. I am also baffled at how leading journals can charge such exorbitant fees and still publish rubbish. Truly disappointing on both ends.

One thing I will say, though, which related to the headline of your post, I’m not all too surprised that a PhD dropout picks up fabrication which they talk about.
In my view there is a very little attention paid to peer review, quality and integrity in training programs.
Perhaps scientists are perfectly capable in identifying misconduct, but our feeling unable to report and act on it due to hidden power structures.
